In 2006, digital was a very different industry.
Sonnet began life as 2BInteractive, started by two people: myself and my business partner, Mark. Mobile was still perpetually described as “the next big thing”. Social media was only beginning to change how businesses communicated. SEO tactics included doorway pages, hidden text and link exchange platforms. The digital services agencies offered, the way teams were structured and the technology clients expected all looked very different.
Then mobile finally arrived in earnest, helped by better devices and data infrastructure. Social media became an essential part of the marketing mix. Search behaviour changed. New platforms and technologies kept emerging.
And now, of course, we are living through another major disruption: AI.
Twenty years in digital teaches you to expect change. There has always been another technology around the corner.
But it has also taught us something else. While technology changes constantly, the fundamentals of a successful digital marketing agency partnership have changed far less.
The challenge is not simply to keep up. It is to know what to adapt to, what not to be distracted by, and what parts of your business should remain constant.
Longevity does not come from chasing every new trend. It comes from knowing where you add value, building great people around you and earning the trust of the people you work with.
For us, that is the foundation of a strong digital marketing agency partnership: combining the right expertise with dependable people, clear communication and a shared understanding of what success looks like.
For agencies, that can mean bringing in specialist SEO expertise when a project requires capabilities they don’t want to build in-house.
Change is inevitable. Chasing everything is optional.
Every major technology shift brings a familiar reaction across the industry: a rush to understand it, adopt it and work out what it means for clients.
That response is understandable. Agencies cannot stand still.
The current AI shift is a good example. Agency adoption is already widespread: Promethean Research reported that around a third of surveyed digital agencies had implemented AI across their businesses, with another 28% actively implementing it.
At the same time, recent Forrester research found generative AI is now used by nine in 10 US marketing agencies, largely to improve productivity and efficiency.
That is significant change. But rapid adoption does not mean every agency needs to chase every AI tool, capability or promise.
One of the biggest lessons from the past 20 years is that you have to evolve without allowing yourself to be distracted by every new thing that appears.
Mobile mattered. Social media mattered. AI matters.
But no technology automatically tells you what your business should become.
The more important question is: where can you genuinely add value?
That question has shaped some of the biggest decisions in Sonnet’s history.
Sometimes the biggest change starts with a difficult lesson
Like many independent agencies, we learned first-hand how much losing a major client can affect a business.
Agency workloads are not linear. Clients come and go. Projects start and stop. Resource requirements can change dramatically from one month to the next.
Anyone who has run an agency understands the challenge. You need enough capability to take on opportunities and deliver good work, but carrying too much fixed overhead can quickly become a problem when workloads change.
Rather than continuing to fight that reality ourselves, we began to see an opportunity to build a business around helping other agencies manage the same ebbs and flows.
That eventually led to our biggest evolution.
In 2018, we rebranded as Sonnet and committed completely to becoming a dedicated white-label delivery partner.
That distinction mattered to us. We did not want to be another traditional agency that happened to offer white-label services on the side. Supporting agencies became our entire focus.
Becoming a white label marketing agency partner was not about adding another service to our offering; it was about building the entire business around helping agencies deliver more effectively without having to build every capability in-house.
The same principle applies to web development. When a client project requires specialist expertise, having a trusted delivery partner means agencies can access the right capabilities without having to build them in-house.
It took time to work out exactly where our niche was, and that process reinforced another important lesson: understanding your delivery lanes matters.
Recent industry research supports the value of focus. Promethean Research found that agencies which narrowed their service mix outperformed many more broadly blended firms on growth and margins, although the results also show that the relationship between specialisation and performance is more nuanced than simply doing fewer things.
The point is not that every agency should offer fewer services. It is that a business needs clarity about where it is genuinely strongest.
For Sonnet, that means continually listening to agency partners, evolving our capabilities where there is a genuine need, and focusing on our digital marketing agency partnership to avoid the temptation to become everything to everyone.
Technology matters. People make the difference.
One of the things I am most proud of over the past 20 years is the team we have built.
We started building our Philippines delivery team in 2012. When Sonnet launched in 2018, that team had grown to 14 people. Today, we have around 30 people supporting agency partners across five countries.
The size of the team matters less than its stability.
Our average employee tenure is now more than four years. That means experience, knowledge and continuity remain within the business rather than constantly walking out the door and needing to be rebuilt.
For an agency partner, that continuity is not just an internal metric. It affects the experience they receive.
A stable team understands how to work together. Processes become more reliable. Communication becomes easier. People develop a deeper understanding of the work and of the agencies they support.
This becomes particularly important as technology makes some parts of delivery faster.
AI will continue to change how work gets done. Better tools will automate tasks, improve efficiency and create new ways of working. Those are positive developments.
But tools do not build trust on their own.
A client still wants to know who is responsible for the work. They want clear communication when something changes. They want people who understand the context behind a request rather than simply processing a task.
The human side of agency relationships remains important. In a 2025 ANA and 4As study, the average tenure of client-agency relationships was reported at about seven years, more than double the 3.2-year average reported in 2016, with the organisations pointing to the importance of value-based partnerships, trust and transparency.
The relationships may be changing, but the value of trust is not disappearing.
The relationships we value most are not transactional
Since becoming Sonnet, we have worked with more than 120 agencies.
Around half still work with us in some capacity. Our average client relationship is more than three years, and 20 of our current active agency partners have been with us for more than five years.
Those numbers probably represent what I am most proud of.
Not because long relationships are a goal in themselves, but because of what they can represent.
The best partnerships are not transactional outsourcing arrangements where work is handed over, completed and forgotten.
Over time, Sonnet becomes part of an agency’s delivery capability. There is regular work month after month. The teams get to know each other. We understand how the agency works, what matters to its clients and how best to support its delivery.
That does not mean every relationship stays exactly the same. Agency needs change. Workloads change. Priorities change.
A good partnership has to adapt to those changes.
In many ways, this is also at the heart of how to scale a digital marketing agency partnership: create a delivery model that can flex with demand while maintaining the quality, communication, and client experience that made the agency successful in the first place.
Having dependable support for Website maintenance services can be equally important, helping agencies maintain continuity for clients as their websites and digital requirements evolve.
Research into agency relationships continues to point in the same direction. Clients place a high value on clear communication, transparency and feeling understood, while recent studies have also highlighted delivery and perceived value as major reasons relationships come under pressure.
For a white-label partner, that is particularly relevant. The relationship cannot rely only on technical capability. Good work matters, but so do reliability, communication and consistency.
Technology can help make delivery faster and more efficient. It cannot, by itself, create a genuine partnership.
The next disruption will come
Looking back over 20 years, one thing seems certain: AI will not be the last major disruption the digital industry experiences.
There will be another technology, another platform or another shift in how clients buy and agencies deliver work.
The exact shape of that change is impossible to predict.
What we can control is how we respond.
The past 20 years have reinforced a few principles for us:
For agencies thinking about how to scale a digital marketing agency sustainably, the answer is rarely about pursuing every new opportunity; it is about knowing which opportunities fit your strengths, your people and your ability to deliver consistently.
Where paid channels form part of that growth strategy, specialist Paid advertising services can also help agencies expand their delivery capabilities without taking every function in-house.
For the next five years, that is where Sonnet intends to keep its focus: being the trusted delivery partner behind independent agencies, deepening the relationships we already have and helping those agencies adapt and scale as the industry continues to change.
Twenty years of digital disruption has taught us that technology will keep moving.
But people still want to work with people they know and trust.
That may be the most enduring lesson of all.
